Alarm or CCTV?
An alarm is designed around detecting defined events; CCTV is designed around viewing and recording scenes. Either can have remote features, but they do different jobs. Ask what event a proposed system will detect and what evidence or response it provides.
Wired or wireless?
Compare installation access, radio coverage, battery upkeep and device compatibility. Wireless can reduce some cable work; it does not remove power, communications or maintenance needs across the whole system.
Local alert or professional monitoring?
A siren sounds at the property. An app sends information to nominated devices. A monitoring service follows an agreed response plan. Confirm the communication paths, contact responsibilities and any recurring or attendance fees.

Compare by the job each system does
| System | Primary job | Question before buying |
|---|---|---|
| CCTV | View and record defined scenes | What detail is required at the target distance and after dark? |
| Alarm | Detect selected events | Which sensors, arming modes and reporting paths meet the routine? |
| Intercom | Answer visitors | Where should calls ring and which entry needs authorised release? |
| Access control | Manage permitted entry | Who can use each door, at what times, and who revokes access? |
| Monitoring | Apply a contracted response to supported signals | Which events, contacts and attendance terms are actually included? |
