Planning details, comparisons and common questions
How this system works
The outdoor station provides a call button, camera and audio interface. It communicates with compatible indoor stations or supported mobile services. If entry release is required, the intercom must be correctly interfaced with suitable lock or gate hardware. A relay output alone does not establish that power, lock selection or gate control work is included.
Compare the main design choices
| Option | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor monitor | A dependable answering point within the property | Check screen position, audibility and the actual call route. |
| Mobile answering | Authorised users away from the indoor station | Check network, account and notification dependencies. |
| Door/gate release | Remote permission to enter | Confirm the interface, supply, approvals and safe exit arrangement. |
Questions that shape the installation
- Where will a visitor stand and how will backlight affect their face?
- Which screens or phones should ring, and in what order?
- Does the existing wiring use a proprietary bus or an IP network?
- Which exact door or gate needs release control?
- Who owns the account and removes old answering devices?
What affects installed cost
Price is affected by the number of entrances and monitors, cable condition, network work, gate distance and release hardware. Trenching, lock supplies and gate-controller changes may be separate work. Request a diagram of the intended call and release paths so every part of the quotation can be checked.
What a useful handover includes
Call from each entrance to every intended answering point. Check intelligible two-way audio, useful video and the correct release function. Test mobile answering using the supported external connection, and retain model, ownership and release-interface information.
A limitation worth understanding
An intercom relay does not power every lock. Ask the installer to confirm the lock supply, release method and safe exit arrangement.

Questions and answers
Can new intercom screens reuse old wiring?
Sometimes, but conductor count and cable condition are only part of the check. The existing bus type, supported topology and compatibility of all retained stations also matter.
Will an IP intercom open my gate?
Only if the proposed equipment and installation include a suitable interface to the gate controller. Ask the installer to confirm the release method, wiring and responsibilities in writing.
