Access control: what to cover in a site survey

Inspect the actual doors, frames, closers, lock supplies and cable paths. Ask how deliveries, visitors and emergency release will work. A photograph of the reader alone is not a complete survey.

Why this decision matters

A photograph of one device cannot establish all relevant cable, power, lighting and operating conditions.

Work through the actual task

  1. Inspect each frame, closer, lock supply, reader and cable path.
  2. Discuss visitors, deliveries and the relevant exit/release requirements.
  3. Ask for the proposed positions and any unresolved assumptions to be marked on a simple plan.

Worked example

The survey covers several entrances with different locking hardware. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A door-by-door scope with unresolved design questions flagged.

Limits and follow-up

Door security must preserve safe exit. Have the appropriate qualified professionals confirm the door and emergency release design.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
