CCTV systems: checking existing equipment

Check whether retained cameras are analogue or IP, the cable condition, power requirements and supported protocols. Resolution alone does not establish that a camera will work with a replacement recorder.

Why this decision matters

Matching brands or connectors do not establish compatibility of the full retained device and its functions.

Work through the actual task

  1. Identify camera signal type, power supply and cable termination.
  2. Have compatibility and cable condition checked before agreeing to retain devices.
  3. Get a written retained-equipment list and clarify responsibility for pre-existing faults.

Build a retained-equipment record

  • Full model and variant, the device location and its job in the current system.
  • Connection, power and interface information available from the installed documentation.
  • Known faults and the particular function the device must retain after the change.
  • Written confirmation of supported compatibility and any remaining limitations.

Worked example

Old coaxial cameras are being compared with a new IP recorder. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A written list of retained cameras, adapters and any unsupported functions.

Limits and follow-up

A recorder is not a backup. Export important clips promptly and check that the exported file plays on a separate device.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
