CCTV systems: internet dependencies and outages

A recorder may continue recording locally when broadband fails, while remote viewing stops. Confirm the exact model’s behaviour and test playback after the connection returns. A mobile app not connecting does not alone prove recordings have stopped.

Why this decision matters

Loss of a remote feature should not be confused with proof that every local function has failed.

Work through the actual task

  1. Check the recorder's local view and recent playback before assuming camera failure.
  2. Compare the local recording timeline before, during and after the outage.
  3. Write down the expected behaviour during a connection loss and the way the system reports it.

Worked example

Remote viewing stops after a broadband outage. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: Times showing whether footage continued while remote access was unavailable.

Limits and follow-up

A recorder is not a backup. Export important clips promptly and check that the exported file plays on a separate device.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
