Security maintenance: account ownership and recovery

Check that default accounts are addressed, recovery ownership is current and supported updates have been considered. Do not place administrator passwords in a widely shared checklist.

Why this decision matters

Shared owner access makes individual revocation and future account recovery harder to manage.

Work through the actual task

  1. Confirm customer/business ownership and current support information.
  2. Plan supported updates and account changes with the appropriate provider.
  3. Test the supported account recovery procedure and store recovery information securely.

Worked example

Recovery access belongs to a former manager and firmware support is unclear. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A security maintenance record without storing secrets in the checklist.

Limits and follow-up

Arrange tests with the monitoring provider first where applicable. Do not trigger a response service without following the agreed test process.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
