Why this decision matters
Matching brands or connectors do not establish compatibility of the full retained device and its functions.
Work through the actual task
- Identify exact models, supply requirements and supported compatibility.
- Have the technician verify the correct part before fitting it.
- Get a written retained-equipment list and clarify responsibility for pre-existing faults.
Build a retained-equipment record
- Full model and variant, the device location and its job in the current system.
- Connection, power and interface information available from the installed documentation.
- Known faults and the particular function the device must retain after the change.
- Written confirmation of supported compatibility and any remaining limitations.
Worked example
A replacement part resembles the original but has a different model suffix. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.
The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A changed-part record listing full model numbers.
Limits and follow-up
Do not open mains powered equipment or defeat tamper switches. Arrange a qualified service visit when a fault needs internal inspection.
If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
