Access control: checking existing equipment

Check the reader protocol, controller capacity, lock voltage and power supply before retaining hardware. An existing card format may not work with a replacement reader even when the physical card looks similar.

Why this decision matters

Matching brands or connectors do not establish compatibility of the full retained device and its functions.

Work through the actual task

  1. Check card format, reader protocol, controller support and lock power.
  2. Ask for a compatibility test before ordering replacements.
  3. Get a written retained-equipment list and clarify responsibility for pre-existing faults.

Build a retained-equipment record

  • Full model and variant, the device location and its job in the current system.
  • Connection, power and interface information available from the installed documentation.
  • Known faults and the particular function the device must retain after the change.
  • Written confirmation of supported compatibility and any remaining limitations.

Worked example

New readers are proposed while old cards are retained. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A proven retained-credential/device schedule with documented limitations.

Limits and follow-up

Door security must preserve safe exit. Have the appropriate qualified professionals confirm the door and emergency release design.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
