SYDNEY ALARMS / GUIDE

Home alarms: checking existing equipment

Check detector wiring, end-of-line arrangements, keypad compatibility and panel capacity before quoting a panel swap. An existing device may need reconfiguration or replacement even if its cable can be retained.

Why this decision matters

Matching brands or connectors do not establish compatibility of the full retained device and its functions.

Work through the actual task

  1. Identify exact models, zone wiring and the intended communication module.
  2. Ask for compatibility and configuration checks before the panel swap.
  3. Get a written retained-equipment list and clarify responsibility for pre-existing faults.

Build a retained-equipment record

  • Full model and variant, the device location and its job in the current system.
  • Connection, power and interface information available from the installed documentation.
  • Known faults and the particular function the device must retain after the change.
  • Written confirmation of supported compatibility and any remaining limitations.

Worked example

An older keypad and detectors are proposed for a Bosch panel upgrade. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A retained-device list and the limitations that remain after the upgrade.

Limits and follow-up

A siren, an app alert and professional monitoring are separate features. Confirm who receives a signal and what they are expected to do.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
