SYDNEY ALARMS / GUIDE

Home alarms: what to cover in a site survey

Walk the normal arrival path and the areas used while the alarm is part-armed. Identify detector obstructions, pet access and the panel’s power supply. Ask for each zone’s intended function to be recorded.

Why this decision matters

A photograph of one device cannot establish all relevant cable, power, lighting and operating conditions.

Work through the actual task

  1. Discuss pet movement, furniture access and sensor selection with the installer.
  2. Survey real entry routes and the panel's power/communication provisions.
  3. Ask for the proposed positions and any unresolved assumptions to be marked on a simple plan.

Worked example

Pets remain in the hallway while the proposed alarm is armed. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A zone design that explicitly records the occupancy and pet assumptions.

Limits and follow-up

A siren, an app alert and professional monitoring are separate features. Confirm who receives a signal and what they are expected to do.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
