SYDNEY ALARMS / GUIDE

Home alarms: repair or replacement decisions

Diagnose a single detector or battery fault before assuming the entire alarm must be replaced. For an upgrade, compare supported communications, spare zones and compatibility with devices you want to retain.

Why this decision matters

Equipment age alone does not explain the fault, the benefit of replacement or the limits retained after repair.

Work through the actual task

  1. Request a diagnosis of placement, environment and device condition.
  2. Compare that repair with an upgrade only if the current system has relevant limitations.
  3. Compare total scope and ongoing costs rather than a panel or recorder price alone.

Worked example

One detector repeatedly alarms but the panel otherwise works. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: The cause identified, corrective action and a test of the affected zone.

Limits and follow-up

A siren, an app alert and professional monitoring are separate features. Confirm who receives a signal and what they are expected to do.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
