CCTV systems: acceptance testing and sign-off

Record a person walking through each intended target area under realistic lighting. Check live view, playback and export. Confirm the agreed retention estimate at the installed settings without treating an estimate as guaranteed storage time.

Why this decision matters

Signing off only that devices are powered leaves the practical outcome and unresolved defects unverified.

Work through the actual task

  1. Walk through each target view under practical lighting and movement.
  2. Check live view, recorded detail, timestamp and a separate-device export.
  3. Keep a signed test record with any outstanding items and the date for follow-up.

The outcome to verify

  • At handover, view an actual recorded event from each target area, confirm the timestamp and export a clip to a separate device. Test authorised remote access on mobile data as well as site Wi-Fi. Retain a camera/channel plan and the instructions needed to retrieve evidence.

Worked example

The installation is ready for sign-off before the owner has reviewed footage. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A result against each agreed view, plus an owner and date for remaining defects.

Limits and follow-up

A recorder is not a backup. Export important clips promptly and check that the exported file plays on a separate device.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
