CCTV systems: power and backup checks

A battery-backed recorder is only useful if its cameras and required network switch are also powered. Ask for the expected operating load and the backup design, rather than assuming a router battery covers CCTV.

Why this decision matters

Backup for one component does not prove the complete required function remains available.

Work through the actual task

  1. List every powered component between camera and stored footage.
  2. Ask for a backup design based on the complete load, including the switch.
  3. Ask the installer to explain the documented backup design and safe test procedure for your equipment.

Worked example

The recorder has backup power but cameras use a separate switch. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: The equipment/load list and the manufacturer's stated backup assumptions.

Limits and follow-up

A recorder is not a backup. Export important clips promptly and check that the exported file plays on a separate device.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
