Why this decision matters
Comparing hardware prices alone can hide different labour, compatibility and recurring-service assumptions.
Work through the actual task
- Compare exact lenses, channels, usable drive capacity and recording settings.
- Identify cable-length, roof-access and conduit assumptions before comparing totals.
- Ask for missing items in writing and keep the accepted scope with your receipt.
Questions and evidence to request
| Question | Useful evidence in the scope |
|---|---|
| Which event needs an identifying image rather than a broad overview? | A position/lens plan stating the target task and distance for each view. |
| What changes after dark: lights, vehicle headlights, shadows or reflections? | A relevant recorded image test or documented lighting/illumination design. |
| Which cable routes, power supplies and network connections are available? | An itemised cable, mounting, power and network scope with exclusions. |
| How long is footage needed, and who can export it? | A recording-settings and usable-storage estimate, plus an authorised export owner. |
| Who should have viewing access and who needs administration? | A viewer/administrator permission plan and customer-controlled account recovery. |
Worked example
Two four-camera quotes have different recorder and drive inclusions. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.
The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A like-for-like inclusions sheet with every optional item separated.
Limits and follow-up
A recorder is not a backup. Export important clips promptly and check that the exported file plays on a separate device.
If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
