CCTV systems: rental-property permissions and handover

Obtain permission for cable routes and mounting holes. Agree who owns the recorder and who can access recordings. For shared areas, clarify the decision maker before a camera view or microphone is enabled.

Why this decision matters

Permission to occupy a property is different from authority to alter shared equipment or transfer its accounts.

Work through the actual task

  1. Identify who authorises mounting, cabling and recording access.
  2. Obtain the relevant permissions and agree account ownership and handover.
  3. Keep written approval and agree how user access will transfer when occupancy changes.

Worked example

A tenant wants cameras at an entrance shared with other occupiers. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: Written scope approvals and the process for removing access when occupancy changes.

Limits and follow-up

A recorder is not a backup. Export important clips promptly and check that the exported file plays on a separate device.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
