CCTV systems: small-business operating routines

Choose views for the entrance, counter and stock access according to the incident you need to review. Name the person who can export evidence. Do not assume every employee needs access to the whole camera system.

Why this decision matters

An operating routine that depends on one unavailable person can fail even when the hardware is functioning.

Work through the actual task

  1. Define the transaction area, entrance view and staff viewing roles.
  2. Demonstrate incident search/export with the nominated incident contact.
  3. Include access changes and incident handling in the staff handover procedure.

Worked example

A small shop wants counter evidence without exposing every view to staff. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: An incident procedure showing who can retrieve which recordings.

Limits and follow-up

A recorder is not a backup. Export important clips promptly and check that the exported file plays on a separate device.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
