Video intercoms: what to cover in a site survey

Stand where visitors will approach and inspect strong backlight, weather exposure and traffic noise. Trace the proposed connection from the entrance to the monitor and any release interface.

Why this decision matters

A photograph of one device cannot establish all relevant cable, power, lighting and operating conditions.

Work through the actual task

  1. Observe the visitor's approach and inspect the route to the answering points.
  2. Ask how station placement and supported equipment address visibility and audio.
  3. Ask for the proposed positions and any unresolved assumptions to be marked on a simple plan.

Worked example

The entrance is exposed to backlight and traffic noise. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: Survey notes identifying lighting, sound and wiring constraints.

Limits and follow-up

An intercom relay does not power every lock. Ask the installer to confirm the lock supply, release method and safe exit arrangement.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
