Why this decision matters
Matching brands or connectors do not establish compatibility of the full retained device and its functions.
Work through the actual task
- Inventory station models and cable topology across the building.
- Require a supported staged compatibility plan before equipment is ordered.
- Get a written retained-equipment list and clarify responsibility for pre-existing faults.
Build a retained-equipment record
- Full model and variant, the device location and its job in the current system.
- Connection, power and interface information available from the installed documentation.
- Known faults and the particular function the device must retain after the change.
- Written confirmation of supported compatibility and any remaining limitations.
Worked example
An upgrade retains some apartment monitors from another generation. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.
The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A unit/common-equipment matrix listing what can remain operational together.
Limits and follow-up
Do not assume a resident can authorise changes to common property. Confirm the approval process and the person authorised to accept the work.
If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
