Security upgrades: checking existing equipment

Verify compatibility using model numbers, cable tests and supported interfaces. Retention should be an explicit design decision; a matching connector is not proof that a device is supported.

Why this decision matters

Matching brands or connectors do not establish compatibility of the full retained device and its functions.

Work through the actual task

  1. Check full models, protocols, power and cable condition.
  2. Require supported evidence before retaining an old device.
  3. Get a written retained-equipment list and clarify responsibility for pre-existing faults.

Build a retained-equipment record

  • Full model and variant, the device location and its job in the current system.
  • Connection, power and interface information available from the installed documentation.
  • Known faults and the particular function the device must retain after the change.
  • Written confirmation of supported compatibility and any remaining limitations.

Worked example

A matching connector is treated as proof of compatibility. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A compatibility schedule identifying limitations that remain.

Limits and follow-up

A new panel or recorder may change app access and ongoing costs. Include user migration, account ownership and demonstrations in the quotation.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
