Security upgrades: what to cover in a site survey

Survey existing cables, power supplies, network capacity and device locations. Identify undocumented equipment before promising a direct replacement, and note assumptions still needing verification.

Why this decision matters

A photograph of one device cannot establish all relevant cable, power, lighting and operating conditions.

Work through the actual task

  1. Survey devices, cables, power and network responsibilities.
  2. Resolve undocumented equipment before finalising a fixed migration design.
  3. Ask for the proposed positions and any unresolved assumptions to be marked on a simple plan.

Worked example

The proposed direct replacement assumes the existing network has spare capacity. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: A surveyed upgrade scope with remaining assumptions marked clearly.

Limits and follow-up

A new panel or recorder may change app access and ongoing costs. Include user migration, account ownership and demonstrations in the quotation.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
