SYDNEY ALARMS / GUIDE

Security upgrades: upfront and ongoing costs

Compare new subscriptions, software licences and maintenance needs with current costs. A cheaper hardware upgrade can introduce a recurring charge for the feature that prompted the change.

Why this decision matters

A low initial price can be misleading when a required feature depends on an unlisted recurring service.

Work through the actual task

  1. Compare new recurring charges with current ones.
  2. Ask which functions are lost if each service ends.
  3. Request an itemised first-year and recurring cost summary with renewal conditions.

Costs to separate for this system

Request new and retained equipment schedules, programming, communication changes, network/door work, training and removal arrangements. Compare total ownership costs with the current system, including licences or subscriptions. Keep a diagnosed repair option separate where it is a credible alternative.

Worked example

The upgrade adds a cloud service and different mobile costs. This is a hypothetical example, not a completed customer installation.

The useful evidence at the end of this example is: An ownership-cost comparison that explains the platform change.

Limits and follow-up

A new panel or recorder may change app access and ongoing costs. Include user migration, account ownership and demonstrations in the quotation.

If the relevant check cannot be completed, record what remains uncertain and who will resolve it before work or sign-off proceeds.
